Finding the Right Lawn Mower: Sifting Through the Reviews

There are so many reviews out there for products that when it comes to shopping for your own, you can become very quickly bamboozled. There are reviews for cooking gear, clothing options and even household power tools, so when you need help choosing your gardening equipment, it’s easy to turn to the reviews to find out what you should be investing in.

The brilliance of reviews is that you can get an insider opinion from people who have used the product and this social proof enables you to make a confident choice. The problem? There are TOO MANY to choose from. Now that you’re ready to tackle the garden and buy a new robot lawn mower, you’ll be turning to as many well-reviewed products as possible to make your choice. However, before you get to that point, you have to know what you’re looking for in the first place. In this article, we’re going to break down what you should be looking for in the right lawn mower so that you can make the right choice.

  1. Consider the type of lawn mower you want. When you choose to buy a new lawn mower, you have to give your garden the very best treatment. The problem is that there are many different mower types out there. From self-propelled budget options to the more expensive robot mowers,  you have to sift through the pros and cons of each to hone in on what’ll work for you. Would you like to push a mower around because you have a very small yard space? A gas-powered mower could be perfect for your large yard. There’s a lot to consider, but understanding each type is the first step.
  2. Think about the power source. Self-propelled mowers are pushed along by you, so you ARE the power behind the mower. Robot mowers are charged and they go when you get them started. Manual mowers are good for a workout and they come with cylindrical blades, chopping up the greenery as you go. There are also gas powered and electric options that require either a tank full of petrol, a rechargeable battery or a plug and go option. Electric lawn mowers are often the most popular, especially cordless, but the battery powered options often have a shorter shelf life.
  3. What type of cut do you want? The reason people hire a gardening service is because they can enjoy those beautiful lawn lines when the mower moves up and down the grass. It’s aesthetically pleasing to look at, but you also want to consider the density and length of your grass so that you can make the right choice with your mower type. Cylinder mowers, for example, offer that clean, precise look to your lawns when you’re mowing. The blades beautifully and smoothly rotate to trap the grass and cut it in one. It can also cut to shorter lengths when compared to other blade options. Rotary mowers are more powerful, however.
  4. Does design matter? The size of the mower really does depend on engine size, and the performance depends on that engine. For example, a mower that you’ll push along and walk behind comes with an engine of around 140cc-190cc. Ride on mowers can go a lot bigger: upwards of 500cc. It’s imperative that you choose a good engine size that tackles all of the necessary mowing tasks you have. Cutting and mulching together can be worked. You should consider the design of the mower, too, because it is too bulky and you’re going to struggle to store it or move it!
  5. Choosing a durable mower. While you’re reading through the copious reviews for mowers, consider how long it’ll last. Your lawn mower is going to be an investment and so you want this to work for you. It’s going to have to last a long time if you want it to be the right investment. The parts should hold well against wear and tear – what are the reviews saying about durability? Pay particular attention to this when you’re reading through it.

  1. Does it come with cool features? While you’re buying a power tool for your backyard, consider the cool features that could be available on the ones that you choose. Modern lawn mowers come with all kinds of features that really matter, and you can choose the ones that suit you. If you have a large garden space to mow regularly, then a modern lawn mower that has a box or bag attached to catch clippings is a must. You should consider this if you don’t want to keep trekking back and forth to your green bin. Another great feature is in the starting system. Some of the push mowers don’t require a power start, but the higher end ones have a feature where it’ll stop without restarting. If you’ve got kids running around, look for mentions of child-safety features in your reviews, too.
  2. Look for comfort options. When you invest in the lawn mower for your home, you want to choose something with great ergonomics. Looking out for this in your search through the reviews is a must. You need it to be comfortable in handle, in height and in movement. Too high up and you wont get enough give behind it to move it through the grass. Too low, and you risk hurting your back while you mow.
  3. Think about the size of your lawns. Front and back of the house? These both need to be properly considered. You need to buy a lawn mower that fits your land size and you want to buy one that also fits in your storage shed. If you’re buying online, pay attention to the dimensions listed by the seller so that you know the size and can continue to measure it up yourself.

Choosing to listen to reviews is important, but you should ensure that you look at more than one site for the reviews and opinions you need. Get more than one opinion before you part with your cash!
