Review: Switchbot Outdoor Spotlight Cam 2K and Hub 2: Wall-to-wall Security for Your Home

If you read or watch any news story in the media, you will almost certainly arrive at the conclusion that we are living in crazy times.

Home and property security is an increasing priority for everyone these days, and this has led to a glut of security products on offer from many manufacturers that all purport to provide the best surveillance solution. Choosing which option to settle upon can be like negotiating a minefield. Fundamentally, it boils down to deciding which features you need, how well the product fits into your lifestyle and the all-important cost factor.

I have to admit that I am now well on my way to “Smartifying” my entire house and property boundary in the process. This has been thanks to their Smart Home Hub 2, which seamlessly allows the user to control, analyse and automate multiple Switchbot devices positioned around the property. The Switchbot Outdoor Spotlight Cam 2K is an impressive home security camera with comprehensive features that will surely satiate the needs, wants and desires of discerning customers.

Design and Build

The Outdoor Spotlight Cam 2K boasts a sleek and robust design that doesn’t look intrusive and exudes both style and functionality. It’s a spherical camera measuring around 3” in diameter. Placing it in its mount adds very little to its size. It resembles an eye in a “socket”. The mount can be fixed almost anywhere and the camera can be rotated within the mount to cover an area of your choosing. Its durable construction ensures reliable operation in all weather conditions from rain, sleet & snow to dust, making it an ideal choice for outdoor and indoor areas. The camera is equipped with a wide-angle lens that provides a panoramic view of the monitored zones. The camera features a wireless battery-powered design and is simple to install. It can also be powered with the Switchbot solar panel (not included).

Motion Detection and Alerting

The camera’s advanced motion detection system accurately detects movements and triggers notifications that you can customise to meet your needs. It can cleverly distinguish between humans, pets and cars which will significantly reduce false alerts – an anomaly that has plagued other security systems. The built-in siren provides an additional layer of deterrence delivering a screeching 100Db audible alert that will surely prevent suspicious activities and unwelcome guests.

Night Vision and Two-Way Audio

As you might expect, the Switchbot Outdoor Spotlight Cam 2K is equipped with night vision capabilities. The camera illuminates the surroundings with its powerful spotlight, allowing for crystal-clear, colour footage even in complete darkness. Disabling the spotlight will also capture night vision footage using LED infrared although the pay-off will be noticeable in black & white images. The two-way audio functionality enables real-time communication with visitors or intruders, giving you the ability to deter suspicious individuals or provide instructions to authorized guests. I found the audio quality to be ok living in the relative peace & quiet of suburbia, although in louder noise environments like a city centre or construction site, this could be an issue.

Smart Home Integration

The Switchbot Hub 2 serves as the central hub for all Switchbot devices in your Smart Home setup, including the Outdoor Spotlight Cam 2K. This integration allows for seamless automation and remote access to the camera and other connected devices. Through the Switchbot app, you can create customized rules to trigger actions based on motion detection, schedule recordings, and receive real-time alerts. The Hub 2 acts as an interface that allows you to control a number of devices, including room lights, TVs, Air Conditioners, Projectors, Robot Vaccuum cleaners etc… in fact, most devices that can receive IR signals can be operated via the Hub 2. I must admit that I have become accustomed to using several remote controllers for all of my devices and so consolidating them all into an app on my phone took some getting used to. The childish prankster in me did relish the consternation I caused when I surreptitiously switched the TV channel while everyone else was intently watching something else.

Video Quality and Storage

The camera records high-quality 2K video that provides detailed footage, capturing clear images of individuals, objects, and events. For the benefit of those who are not quite “au fait” with the perplexing terminology used to describe resolution, here is a brief summary.

HD = 1280 x 720 pixels

4K = 2560 x 1440 pixels

8K = 768 x 4320 pixels

2K generally sits between HD and 4K and is regarded acceptable for most domestic security cameras. Security cameras that produce 4K and 8K resolution currently require significant hardware demands which would almost certainly impact the cost of the camera which could make purchasing a prohibitive exercise.

The footage is stored locally on a microSD card (not included) with storage capacity of up to 256GB. A Cloud storage solution is also available that requires an additional subscription. This provides access to recorded footage, remote viewing, and extended storage options.

Conclusion

The Switchbot Outdoor Spotlight Cam 2K with Hub 2 is an exceptional home security solution that combines advanced surveillance capabilities with the convenience of smart home integration. Its reliable motion detection, high-quality video, night vision, and two-way audio make it a highly effective deterrent and surveillance device. The only real flaw that I have been able to identify with the camera is that it needs to be positioned in a discreet location. While the presence of a security camera is often enough of a deterrent to would-be thieves, being detachable from its mount, could (ironically) make itself prone to theft. A locking mechanism would help although from a design perspective, this could hinder its flexibility to be rotated and angled as desired.

The Hub2 is not without flaws either even though it is an upgrade from the previous model. The addition of room temperature and humidity monitor could benefit some users but the power cable isn’t as flexible as it needs to be to remain fixed in the power socket in the rear compartment.

Flaws aside, the seamless integration of the Hub 2 with other devices in the Switchbot eco-system, provides additional automation and remote access which enhances the overall security and peace of mind for the user. Whether you seek enhanced security or smart home convenience, the Switchbot Outdoor Spotlight Cam 2K is definitely worth consideration. As with the other Switchbot products I have reviewed, it delivers exceptional performance and good value for money.
